Getting Ready for Your First Massage

It's a wonderful experience, but if you've never done it before, you might be a little freaked out by the idea of a massage.  My husband, for instance, doesn't want to do it.  We've got a gift certificate (thanks to the wonderful NEPA Perks program) for a couple's massage and I thought it might be helpful for those of you who have never done this before to get a head's up on what your massage will be like.  Below are some helpful suggestions to make the most of your experience so you will get the most out of it and be able to relax from the moment you walk in the door!

First, your therapist will ask you to fill out your health information. This is very important because there are certain parts of the body that should be avoided when giving a massage to a pregnant women or a diabetic client. Make sure you list all the medications that you are currently taking.

Second, Your therapist will take you to your room and ask you to undress and lay under the cover on the massage table face up. The therapist will step out for you to get undress. Now you are wondering should I take off everything, well yes you can. Undress to the level of your comfort. You are always securely covered throughout your massage session. Remember, this isn't something naughty and there won't be a single moment where you will feel anything but relaxation, so don't worry about being naked, your massage therapist has seen lots of uglier people than you and won't care a bit!

Third, Your therapist will knock on the door and ask if you are ready. If you say yes, the therapist will enter the room and ask you if you are comfortable and where would you like them to focus on the most during your session. Just relax your body, mind and spirit. The therapist will start working on your scalp, neck, shoulder, arms, legs and feet. Your therapist will ask you to flip and put your face down in the "face cradle". When you are laying face down you massage therapist will work on your legs, gluts, back, your neck and your scalp.

At the end of your session, your massage therapist will ask you to get dressed. When you leave the room, the therapist will meet with you for payment and to schedule another appointment.  Remember, this is one of those situations where tipping IS apporpriate, so please, if you were satisfied, be generous!

Make sure you Drink plenty of water after your massage Session, Avoid taking a shower after your massage session unless you use epsom salt and a warm water bath.
